Game Of Thrones’ Season 7, Episode 2 Review: ‘Stormborn’
1Daenerys questions Varys
Daenerys begins her quest for the Iron Throne by looking at her allies. In many ways, her new allies are supposed to be her enemies. Tyrion is a Lannister, and only recently turned his back on his family. Varys served both the Mad King and Robert Baratheon, and he was responsible for the spying that followed Daenerys as soon as she wed Khal Drogo.
The episode opens with her questioning Varys. How can he, having once served the man who ended the Targaryen rule, claim to be loyal to her?
Varys is a secretive man, but here he reveals that his true loyalty has always been with the people, because he grew up among them. He serves the person he believes to be the best ruler. He supported Robert because he was definitely a better choice than Aerys, and he will continue to make decisions for the good of the people.
The real issue underlying Daenerys’ questions, is, of course, her contemplation of the kind of ruler she would make. She is not her grandfather, as illustrated by her refusal to immediately attack King’s Landing and risk innocent lives. In order to keep her in check, she asks Varys to tell her whenever he feels she has failed the people. But the message is clear; if he ever betrays her, she will burn him alive.
